Death By One Million Anecdotes

In a NYT op-ed talking about some book I’ve never heard of, we get this:

“Only a vampire, ladies,” said Jessica Valenti, the author of “Full Frontal Feminism.” She worries that in the real world, young men are spending so much time watching pornography on the Internet that they will never be satisfied with normal women and normal relationships.

This sure sounds like trouble to me: A generation of guys who will settle for nothing less than a porn star meets a generation of women who expect their boyfriend to crawl through their bedroom window at night and just nuzzle gently until they fall asleep.

Now, I’d really love to see hard evidence (pun potentially intended) that there is a generation of guys who demand porn star looks (btw, is porn star looks a compliment, they seem pretty trashy to me). I just haven’t seen any evidence that most men have uniform and selective preferences with regards to physical attributes nor that they put physical attributes as the sole criterion in coupling.

Then we have this abortion of a TV show:

I’m pretty sure that a man watching this show would be more critical of these women for being the type of women who would agree to be on this show or for the fact that some of them are bat-shit crazy than of their looks. That doesn’t stop a feminist from tying it into a claim that sexual objectification hurts women’s self-image. I don’t doubt that this is true, but the implication common here is that “men” are responsible, leading me to ask, which men? Are there statistics on how many men catcall or otherwise clearly objectify women? And by objectify, can we please use a sane definition that doesn’t include any display of sexual interest?

I mean, can women not see why many men resent this sort of claim? Based on anecdotes of the biggest bunch of asshats and douchebags among us, our entire gender is condemned.
