Is It Wrong That I…

1. So, I watched Soylent Green and I don’t think it is really a spoiler at this point to say Soylent Green is people. Is it wrong that I am not horrified by that? It is a world where global warming has killed off most sources of food. It would be wrong to waste the nutrition of the deceased in this situation just as it was proper for those in the Alive story to turn to cannibalism to survive. They weren’t killing people to provide the food supply (though it would certainly be a valid concern as stated in the movie) so the real question is, why was it treated as such a big secret that Soylent would kill over it? They needed better PR people to just sell it outright and save the suspense. But then, that wouldn’t be a good movie.

2. Is it wrong that I feel like I’m getting fucked by Affirmative Action every time I have to fill out an (optional) section in a job or school application telling them my race/ethnicity and gender. What exactly do they need the information for if not to in one way or another hold it against me that I’m a white man. Either they apply it directly to quotas or they use it indirectly to find out that group x is underrepresented leading to one action or another to rectify this. Perhaps Affirmative Action can be justified when talking about macrosociety, but when taken to an individual level, it is intolerable. Those hurt may not be responsible for any of the harm and those helped may not have been harmed themselves. It is such a blunt instrument for resolving historic inequalities.
