BtP: Andrew Jackson

Welcome to Blogging the Presidents: A Voting While Intoxicated™ Almost Original Series. We will be taking a serious look at the 42 men who have led our country and hopefully finding a few laughable details.
PART VII
Andrew Jackson is our second “War Hero” President, George Washington being the first, though others certainly served. While George Washington, whatever his abilities as General, won the Revolutionary War, Andrew Jackson’s main victory was in the Battle of New Orleans, after the end of the War of 1812 of which it was a part. Now, Jackson isn’t to blame, the news had not reached them, yet considering him a war hero for this victory would be like considering those who dropped the second atomic bomb to be war heros had Japan surrendered after the first but the word had not gotten to them.

Jackson was a bad President. Despite evidence of the need for a national bank and an economic role, forcing even the formerly resistant Democrats to acknowledge it, he worked to undo it and provoked a major depression.

Perhaps his worst offense was in relations with Native Americans. His hostile policies towards them and support for their removal to the West were at his core. There is plenty of reason to believe that co-existence was possible, but instead Jackson took a route that killed thousands of Native Americans. This attitude towards Native Americans that Jackson is the strongest symbol of is, to me, an equal disgrace to slavery.

Not only was Jackson the worst President to that point in history, he was also the first President who faced an assassination attempt, so I guess that figures.
