“To Change Washington, Move Out”

I know it might not fit traditional campaigning wisdom to steal campaign ideas from a NY Times Editorial but if I was part of the Obama or McCain campaign, I would be all over this recommendation by Mark W. Everson. Seriously, this is a brilliant idea that a) gives specifics on how to “change” the Washington DC culture b) actually produce good policy and c) can be tailored to target specific voters in battleground states in order to improve their job opportunities. ” Vote for me and I’ll bring the Department of Homeland Security to Pennsylvania.” “Vote for me and I’ll bring DC jobs to the state of Michigan.” What’s even more beautiful is that you don’t have to worry about pissing off DC constituents because they have no electoral college votes anyway! It’s win-win all around! Of course, it also happens to be gimmicky and remarkably unlikely of ever becoming actual policy but it would make a great campaign speech and the press has proven to be a sucker for these types of gimmicks. They eat this shit up. So give it to them.

FWIW, the District of Columbia has 3 electoral votes, though I’m not sure that either side could piss them off enough not to vote Democrat however. That said, I would endorse it as a reasonable idea in theory. I’m not sure I’d just move in whole stuff that resides in DC already. What would we do with all those grand buildings that currently house all of the departments? Perhaps a more reasonable approach would be to distribute any future expansions across the country (decided on aptness of location and state/regional balance) along with a slow stream of existing things out as their current locations fall out of suitability.

Of course, looking at USA Jobs listings, there are a lot of federal jobs that aren’t in DC.
